"What is radon" has about 390 searches per month in Canada. The site ranks around 77th place. Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium present in the soil. It has no smell, no color, and no taste.
How it enters the house
The gas forms under the foundation. The warmer house draws it in through the slab, cracks, sump pit, and plumbing penetrations. Two neighboring houses can have very different levels. A map does not replace a measurement in the rooms where you live.
Why it is measured
Health Canada classifies it among the causes of lung cancer, after tobacco. It cannot be detected by smell. The only reference is a test long enough to be compared to 200 Bq/m³.
The 4-day test detects radon. The 91-day test follows the normal life of the house. Both sheets show $74.72 taxes included: detector $39.99 + return and laboratory $25 + taxes.
If the level exceeds 200 Bq/m³
You do not ventilate the house year-round to "eliminate" the gas. It is drawn out from under the slab with a mitigation system. Standard installation: $2,799.99 + taxes, price confirmed before work. Request on the mitigation page or at 418-681-7964.
