Is a 2-Hour Radon Test Valid?

Some inspection companies offer a radon test conducted during the inspection. A test of about 2 hours. The inspector uses a digital detector that displays a result after 10 minutes. That’s reassuring, right? At the end of the inspection, which lasts about 2 hours, this inspector can tell me if I am near or not the limit of 200 bq/m3. For example, if the result is 95 bq/m3 after 2 hours. The inspector tells me that I am far from 200 bq/m3 and that everything is okay and that this test is not precise. Is this test valid? Can I sleep peacefully knowing my family is safe? NO!

The CARST (Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists) issued guidelines for PNCR-C (National Radon Proficiency Program - Canada) professionals in 2018, which can be consulted at the following address: https://carst.ca/resources/Documents/Directives%20d%27ACSTR%20-%20immobiliere.pdf

A preliminary test should be conducted over a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 7 days. The ideal period is 4 days. According to scientific data, even a continuous measurement device requires a minimum measurement period of 4 hours before the data can subsequently be usable.

The recommended devices for a short-term test are either a continuous measurement detector, an alpha track detector, or an ion chamber and electret detector. Digital devices are currently not among the recommended devices.

Why does Health Canada not recognize digital detectors as valid? It is impossible to validate the calibration accuracy of these devices or to modify their parameters. A test conducted by Health Canada in 2020 with this type of device showed significant variability between devices of the same model. For example, a device of model "X" from manufacturer "Y" provides a value 20% above the radon level maintained in the test chamber, while an identical device shows 20% less. What will be the reliability of your device "X"? It is impossible to know if it displays a real rate, above or below the actual radon level present. Suppose the device shows 170 bq/m3. If it displays a high reading, the value should be reduced by 20%, resulting in 136 bq/m3. Conversely, if it shows a low reading, 20% should be added, resulting in 204 bq/m3. This significant margin of error can create a false sense of security even when using this type of device long term. The use of a certified device is recommended at all times according to recognized protocols, whether for short- or long-term testing.

Radon fluctuates over time. To protect the public, CARST issued a directive lowering the minimum rate compared to the target rate for long-term tests. It is only 75 bq/m3 during the heating period and 50 bq/m3 during the summer period. Beyond these thresholds for a short-term test, a long-term test is recommended.

Do not be misled by a false sense of security. Work with a recognized PNCR-C professional or an inspector who has completed appropriate training and uses a device according to recognized measurement protocols.
