Radon for renters in Canada

Radon is not settled by the lease signing. It is measured. A tenant can set a detector in the lowest room they use. No renovation, no holes in the slab.

What to keep

The lab report, the room, and the start and end dates. If the level is over 200 Bq/m³, send that report to the landlord and ask for a repair. Habitability rules differ by province. This is not legal advice. A tenants’ board or a lawyer reads the local act.

Which test

91 days while you live there, preferably in winter. A 4-day test can open the conversation sooner. The repair decision should rest on the long measurement. Which length.

The 4-day test is a first reading. The 91-day test is the length Health Canada uses to judge a full heating season. Both are $59 before tax. Shipping, the prepaid return, and the lab are included. Tax is extra. The PDF report is emailed within 2 business days after the lab receives the detector.

Above 200 Bq/m³, the fix is a fan that pulls soil gas from under the slab and exhausts it above the roof. Radon Gas is C-NRPP certified for testing and for mitigation, and ships kits across Canada. Start from the Canada test page.
